Memory Flashcards
Memory is a consequence of what?
Information processing
Memory is the reason why previously processed information can affect current information processing
What is direct influence of memory?
A deliberate attempt to search for or retrieve information on a past experience
What is indirect influence memory?
When information is retrieved unconsciously, occurs during certain motor skills (muscle memory)
List the three stages of memory storage
- Short-term sensory store (STSS)
- Short-term memory (STM)
- Long-term memory (LTM)
What are the characteristics of the STSS stage?
- Holds massive amount of information the fades shortly
- Stores literal information for < 1 second
- Has a limitless capacity
What are the characteristics of the STM stage?
- Storage system for information from STSS or LTM, labeled “working memory”
- Effortful
- Loses information within 30 to 60 seconds
- Limited capacity of approximately 7 bits of information
How is an “action plan” carried out?
Information from LTM is retrieved for processing and joined with STSS information in the STM to create an action plan
What are characteristics of the LTM stage?
- Practiced items are “protected” and more permanently placed in LTM
- Limitless capacity and duration
What is implicit memory?
A type of LTM that allows you to do something (skills, simple tasks, habits) without conscious thought
What is explicit memory?
A type of LTM that allows you to be able to relay events and recall facts, can influence conscious motor task learning and performance
Describe effective use of LTM
- Information can be accurately transferred into LTM
- Information can be actively retrieved from LTM
For an individual to learn or re-learn a task, what must exist?
Plasticity
