Q

Long Term Memory Summary

A
  • Encoding is the input (puts sensory info into storage)
  • unlimited
  • mainly semantic info but also acoustic and visual

Q

What are the 3 reasons why we forget things?

A
  • Displacement = new incoming info pushes out older info
  • Interference = overwritten by new information
  • Can’t find memory, lose link

Q

Sensory Register and role of attention

A

sensory register = stores all sensory information
if we pay attention to this info
its transferred from STM -> LTM
if not payed attention to, information decays

Q

Role of Rehearsal

A
  • repeating information holds it in STM longer

- if rehearsed for long enough gets transferred into LTM

Q

Strengths and Weaknesses of the Multi Store Model

A

+amnesia cases = show brain injury can damage LTM and STM remains intact, info can be lost and destroyed
+Murdock = you recall more words at beginning and end of word list than middle, you’ve had more time to repeat the words before they are displaces
-do not repeat every piece of info to remember it = meaningful
-unlikely there is only 1 type of LTM = amnesia, some LTM stays intact, some goes
