Memory Flashcards
What is encoding?
Information converted to a form that the brain can process and store
What is storage?
Retention of information
What is retrieval?
Recovery of stored material
What is the sensory memory
It retains all visual and auditory input and only lasts a few seconds.
What does the long term memory consist of
Unlimited amount of information for a long time.
What are the 3 ways to aid the transfer of information from STM to LTM
Rehearsal , Organisation and elaboration of meaning
What two ways can information be encoded?
Shallow encoding (rehearsal) or elaborative encoding (deeper form of encoding leading to improved retention)
What aids the retrieval of items from the LTM?
Contextual Cues.
