Divisions of the nervous systems and neural pathways Flashcards
What does the somatic nervous system consist of?
Sensory and motor neurons
What does the autonomic nervous system consist of?
The parasympathetic and the sympathetic systems.
What does the sympathetic system do?
Prepare body for action. By increasing HR , breathing rate by allowing bronchioles to take in more air and decreasing peristalsis and production of intestinal secretions.
What does the parasympathetic system do?
Calms body down returning to normal. Decreasing HR, breathing rate by constricting bronchioles so less air took in, increasing rate of peristalsis and production of intestinal secretions
What is the CNS made up of?
Brain and Spinal Cord
The PNS allows for information to be sent to and from the CNS, what does it consist of?
Somatic and Autonomic nervous systems.
What does the autonomic system regulate?
The internal environment by controlling structures and organs, control is involuntary.
Converging neural pathway
Impulses from several sources are channeled towards and meet at a common destination
Diverging neural pathway
The route along which impulses travel divides allowing information to be transmitted to several destinations at once
Reverberating neural pathway
Neurons later in the pathway form synapses with neurones earlier in the pathway forming a loop enabling impulses to be cycled and stimulated repeatedly
