Memory Flashcards
Adaptive Memory
remember what we need to remember
3 Stages of memory
Sensory, Short term, Long term
Memory
the ability to store and retrieve information over time
3 functions of memory
encoding, storage, and retrieval
Encoding
the process of transforming what we perceive, think, or feel into an enduring memory
Storage
the process of maintaining information in memory over time
Retrieval
the process of bringing mind information that has been previously encoded and stored
Semantic encoding
the process of relating new information in a meaningful way to knowledge that is already stored in memory
Semantic judegment
the meaning of words (Is hat a type of clothing?)
Rhyme judgement
the sounds of the words (Does hat rhyme with cat?)
Case judgement
participants have to think about the appearance of the words (Is HAT written in uppercase or lowercase?)
The frontal lobe has to do with what type of judgement?
semantic judgement and organizational judgement
The occipital lobe has to do with what type of judgement?
visual judgement
More activity in lobes means what?
Better memory
Visual imagery encoding
the process of storing new information by converting it into mental pictures
Organizational encoding
the process of categorizing information according to the relationships among a series of items
Hiarchy
grouping items according to their place in a logical outline within a particular area of knowledge
Encoding survival related information draws on which encoding elements?
semantic, visual imagery, and organizational encoding
Chunking
arranging information in units of manageable size to assist encoding
What kind of chunking should be done to remember individual items ?
Larger chunks
What kind of chunking should be done to remember a long strong of information in a particular order?
Smaller chunks
clustering
ordering information in logical categories
In which lobe does encoding happen?
left frontal lobe
In which lobe does retrieval happen?
right frontal lobe
