Membrane Transport Flashcards
How do substances move through the membrane?
passive transport, active transport, simple diffusion, facilitated diffusion, osmosis,
Passive Transport
move solutes WITH their concentration gradient (high to low concentration).
no energy required
ex. simple diffusion, facilitated diffusion, osmosis
Active Transport
can move solutes AGAINST their concentration
energy is required (ATP)
ex. exocytosis, endocytosis
Simple Diffusion
small, uncharged solutes (O2, CO2), lipids
no membrane proteins needed
Facilitated Diffusion
large and/or charged solutes (glucose, Na+, etc.)
requires membrane proteins
Osmosis
diffusion of H2O
simple and facilitated (depending on cell)
Endocytosis
membrane folds in to bring material inside the cell in a vesicle
Exocytosis
vesicle fuses with the membrane to release material outside the cell
What are three Active Processes?
Active Transport, Endocytosis, and Exocytosis.
Selectively Permeable
a membrane that will allow certain molecules or ions to pass through it by diffusion and occasionally specialized facilitated diffusion
