Membrane Receptors Flashcards
1
Q
4 main receptor types
A
- Ligand-gated ion channel
- G-protein-coupled receptor
- Kinase-linked receptor
- Nuclear receptor
2
Q
Timescales of different receptor types
A
- Ligand-gated = milliseconds
- GPCR = seconds
- Kinase-linked = hours
- Nuclear = hours
3
Q
Mechanism of action of GPCRs
A
- Ligand binds to receptor, causing it to bind to a heterotrimeric G-protein
- Binding promotes release of GDP for GTP
- G-protein dissociates into alpha and beta-gamma subunits
- Subunits regulate different effectors in membrane
4
Q
What is the function of adenylyl cyclase?
A
Converts ATP to cyclic AMP (cAMP) - the second messenger
5
Q
What enzyme deactivates cAMP and what is formed?
A
- cAMP phosphodiesterase
- Forms AMP
