Meltwater shaping glacial landforms Flashcards
outwash plane
large material is deposited first, finer material is deposited further away
meltwater channels
channels cut by glacial meltwater under, along and in front of ice masses. capable of intense erosion
proglacial lakes
form in front of glaciers. meltwater streams flow into proglacial lakes-slow down and deposit sediment on ice (DELTAS) from which sediment is deposited on valley floor
kettle holes
blocks of ice melt leaving deep depressions in the outwash plane
eskers
long, winding ridges of sand + gravel that run in the same direction as the glacier. they are deposits of subglacial meltwater streams underneath the glacier
kames
mounds of sand + gravel found on valley floor often in association with kettle holes. when ice melts, the debris is dumped on the valley floor in a chaotic manner
braided rivers
multi-channelled rivers separated by island of sediment. intense energy of the meltwater streams increases the size and volume of material carried by the river
