Melting and Dissolving Flashcards
What is the difference between melting and dissolving?
Dissolving involves two materials; the resulting solution is a mixture of both.
Melting only one substance is needed and the liquid and solid are the same material. Heat is needed for melting to occur.
If you put butter in a fry pan and heat it what will happen?
It will melt into a liquid.
What is needed for a solid to turn to a liquid?
Heat
Do all solids melt when heated?
No. They may burn or decompose.
What do we call the substance that disolves?
The solute.
Give an example of solutes that dissolve in water?
Sugar and salt.
What do we call the liquid that the solute dissolves in?
The solvent.
When we mix the solute and the solvent together we get…
The solution.
Are all liquids soluble in water?
No.
What does saturated mean?
When a solute doesn’t dissolve in a solvent anymore.
What does unsaturated mean?
When a solute is still able to dissolve in a solvent.
How are crystals formed?
When a hot, supersaturated solution is allowed to cool.
How can we increase the rate of solubility?
By stirring or heating.
How can a solute be retrieved?
By allowing the solvent to evaporate.
Does the size of the solid influence how quickly it is soluable?
Yes. The finer/smaller it is the quicker it will dissolve.
