Melodic tendencies of Intervals Flashcards
Registral direction;
Small intervals continue in the same direction(up, up). Large intervals continue in different direction (up, down).
Intervallic difference;
a small interval follows an interval similar in size. Large intervals imply an interval that is relatively smaller in size.
Registral return;
Occurs when an interval moves to a third note that is identical to or near ( 2 semitones) the first note of that interval.
Proximity;
The next note is expected to be close to the current note,
Closure;
is determined by two conditions: first, a
change in registral direction; and second, movement to
a smaller-sized interval
Leap
A large melodic pitch interval. An interval larger than two or three semitones.
Post Skip Reversal
The psychological expectation that a large melodic pitch interval will be followed by a change in direction.
Gap Fill
The idea that when a musical “gap” is created by a leap, it is typically followed by stepwise motion that “fills” in the gap. If you skip C to G you go backwards
G-F-E-D.
