David Huron/Chill evoking mechanisms in music Flashcards
What are the musical elements that can produce chills?
Rapid large increase in loudness, abrupt change of tempo, new harmony, abrupt modulation, texture(change of many instruments to single instruments and vice versa), adding very high instruments and very low instruments(low bass, high treble), infrasound (frequencies below audibility), scream-like sounds.
What pitch is associated with aggression?
Low Pitch.
What do all the Chill producing elements have in common?
They all elements that produce Fear.
Are frisson or chills common in music?
No.
What is Schematic predictability?
Here the music is constructed so that it conforms to whatever existing schemas listeners are likely to bring to the listening experience such as melodic tendencies like pitch proximity.
What is Dynamic predictability?
This are expectations as the music unfolds. If a melody repeatedly rises, a listener might expect it to continue rising. There are some expectations that the song creates independent from melodic tendencies.
Schematic Surprise
Here the music is constructed so that it violates some existing schema that listeners have brought to the listening experience
Dynamic Surprise
Here the music is constructed so that the work itself will set up some work-specific expectation that is then violated.
Dynamic Predictability
Refers to the expectations that arise in real-time as a piece of music unfolds. Including patterns and repetitions within the piece.
