meiosis stage 2 Flashcards
what happens during prophase 2
-centrioles replicate and move to poles
-new spindle fibres form at right angles to previous spindle axis
-nucleur envelope that may have reformed breaks down
-chromosomes condense and coil, each consisting of 2 chromatids
what happens during metaphase 2
-chromosomes attach by centromere to equator of spindle
-chromatids of each chromosome are randomly arranged
what happens during anaphase 2
-the centromeres divide
-the chromatids of each chromosome are pulled apart by motor protiens along tubulin threads to opposite poles
-chromatids therefore randomly segregated
what happens during telophase 2
-nucleur envelope forkms around each of 4 haploid nuclei
-in animals, 2 cells divide to give 4 haploid cells
-in plants, a terad of 4 haploid are formed
when does independent assortment of chromatids happen
-during metaphase 2
what is independent assortment of chromatids
- random distribution of sister chromatids into daughter cells during meiosis II
-there is no set pattern as to whether maternal or paternal chromatid of chromosome will face one pole or the other
sister chromatids in independent assortment of chromatids
despite having diff alleles they are still considered sister chromatids because they originate from the same chromosome
why does random assortment of chromosomes not happen in metaphase II
-there are no homologous chromosomes to assort independently
