meiosis (chapter 6) Flashcards
what is an allele
Different versions of the same gene
prophase 1
chormosomes condense, the nuclear envelope disintegrates, the neucleolus disappeares and spindle formation begins
meatphase 1
is the same as mitosis excpet that the homologous pairs of chromosomes assemble alongthe metaphase plate insteaad of the indivisual chromosomes.
Indepepndant assortment.
anaphase 1
is different from aaphase in mitosis because the homologous chromosomes are pulled to the opposite poles and the chromatids stay joined to eachother.
telophase 1
the same as telophase in mitosis. the chromosomes assemble at each pole and the nuclear membrane reforms. Chromosomes uncoil.
The cell undergoes cytokinesis and divides ito 2 cells , chromosome reduction is comlete ( goes from diploid to haploid)
prophase 2
the chromosomes condense and become visible again. The nuclear envelope breakes down and spndle formation begins.
metaphase 2
Differs from metaphase 1, the indivsual chromosomes assemble on the metaphase plate. (like in mitosis)
independant assortment again which leads to more genetic variation.
anaphase 2
Unlike anaphase 1, it results in the chromatids of the indivisual chromasomes being pulled to opposite poles of the cell after the division of the centromeres (same as mitosis)
telophase 2
the chromatids assemble at the poles. The chromasomes uncoil and form chromatin again, the nuclear envelope reforms.
cytokinesis causes 4 daughter cells
