Meiosis Flashcards
What is meiosis
a special type of reproduction only used for the production of sex cells = gametes. it is similar to mitosis except there are two division with 4 haploid cells being produced
what is a gamete
sex cell
what is a haploid
cells that have hald teh number of chromomsomes as diploid cells and therefore only contain a single pare of chromosomes (n)
what is a diploid
contains 2 complete sets of chromosomes (2n)
what are the 5 differences between mitosis and meosis
goal of process MITOSIS - growth, repair and reproduction MEIOSIS - reproduction of sex cells which cells MITOSIS - somatic cells MEIOSIS - gametes nO of daughter cells MITOSIS - 2 MEISOSIS - 4 nO of chromosomes in daughter cell MITOSIS - diploid 2 sets MEIOSUS- haploid half the number
What are the 11 steps of meiosis
interphase 1, prophase1 ,metaphase 1, anaphase 1, telphase, cytokeneisis 1, prophase 11, metphase 11, anaphase 11, telophase 11, cytokensis 11
Explain the first 6 steps of Meiosis
- inter - chromosomes start to replicate
- pro - chromosomes have replicated into pairs of chromatids
- Meta - chro from each [aremy [aor up randomly along equator and cross over
- ana - whole chromosomes are pulled to the opposite ends of cell
- telo - nuclear membrane appears around each set of chro
- cyto - cell divides to produce two cells
Exlpain the second 6 steps
- pro II - in each of the two cells nucleare membranse starts to breakdown
- meta II - in each of the two cells chro lines up along cell equator
- ana II - in each of the two cells chromosomes are pulled apart and individual chromatids to opposite end of cell
- telo II - in each of the two cells nuclear membranse appears around each set of chro
- Cyto II - the two cells have dividied to produce 4 daughter cells
how does crossing over create variation
creates new combos of genes in the gametes that are not found in either parent contributing genetic diveristy
