DNA Flashcards
Describe the structure of DNA
DNA is made up of subunit molecules called nucleotides. Each nulceotide contains a phosphate group, a deoxyribose sugar group and a nitrogen base (adenine-thymine, guanine-cytosine). The nucleotides join together to form two long strand that spiral together forming a double helix.
Where is DNA found?
in the nucleus of teh cell
How many types of DNA are there

What is the purpose of DNA replication
DNA replication ensures that all of the tissue cells in an organism will carry the same gentic instruction as the replication doubles the cells. DNA passes on genetic info from one gen to teh next by 1. creating new cells and organism repro.
What are the steps in the process of DNA replication (like a zip)
- the enzyme helicase separates to complimentary strands of DNA exposing the nucleotides of each strand which serves as a template for the making of a new complimentary strand
- the enzyme polymerase free floating nucletodies in the cytosplasm join the complimentary DnA strand on either side
- as the two double strand are now complete they begin to twist back into a double helix now they contain both old and new DNA (called semi-conservative)
