Meiosis Flashcards
1
Q
What happens during reproduction?
A
The two sex cells combine to form a new individual
2
Q
Why do the gametes only have half the number of chromosomes?
A
So that when the gametes fuse the child has a full set of chromosomes (half from the mother and half from the father) in order to allow variation
3
Q
What is meiosis?
A
Cell division which produces cells which have half the normal number of chromosomes
4
Q
What are the stages of meiosis?
A
- the DNA duplicates so that there are two of each chromosome
- the chromosomes are lined up then split so that each cell has only one of each chromosomes
- the arms of the chromosomes are then pulled apart so that their are four gametes each with only a single set of chromosomes
5
Q
How many chromosomes do gametes have?
A
23 single chromosomes
