Meiosis Flashcards

1
Q

What is the second step of meiosis ( NOT THE SECOND DIVISION) ?

A

The pairs are pulled apart, so each new cell only has one new copy of chromosome. Each new cell will have a mixture of the fathers and the mothers chromosomes. Mixing up the genes like this creates variation in the offspring.

Q

What happens in the first division of meiosis?

A

before the cell starts to divide, it duplicates DNA( so there is enough for each new cell.)
FIRST DIVISION= the chromosomes line up in pairs in the centre of the cell.

Q

What happens in the second step of meiosis?

A

Q

Second step of second division in meiosis?

A

You get four haploid gametes, each only has a single set of chromosomes. The gametes are all genetically different.

Q

Simplified explanation of meiosis?

A

*Division 1- duplicates DNA so there is enough for each new cell.chromosomes line up in pairs in centre of cell.
Pairs are bulled apart. Some father and mother chromosomes go in to each new cell, creating variation in offspring.
*Division 2- chromosomes line up again in centre of cell, arms of chromosomes are pulled apart. You get four haploid gametes that are all genetically different.
