Function Of The Blood Flashcards
What are the bloods four main components?
Plasma
Platelets
Red blood cells
White blood cells
what is the job of red blood cells?
Red blood cells have the job of carrying oxygen. They are small and have bioconcave shape to give a large surface area for absorbing and releasing oxygen. They contain haemoglobin. In the lungs, haemoglobin reacts with oxygen to from oxyhaemoglobin.
Red blood cells don’t have a nucleus -this frees up space for more haemoglobin, so they can carry more oxygen.
What is a pathogen?
Pathogen are microorganisms that cause disease, certain types if bacteria and funguses.
Once pathogens enter your body they produce rapidly until they are destroyed. That’s the job of your immune system, and white blood cells are the most important part of it.
What do phagocytes do?
Phagocytes ingest pathogens
They detect things that are foreign to the bodyf
