Meiosis Flashcards
Meiosis
-Occurs in sex cells to produce gametes (egg + sperm cells)
-Meiosis results in 4 different daughter cells that are haploid.
-Parent cell undergoes PMAR twice
-Meiosis is called a reduction division because chromosome number goes from 46 to 23.
Chromosomes and sex cells
-Humans have 46 chromosomes
-Egg and sperm cells only have 23 chromosomes
-During fertilization and egg cell (23) and a sperm cell (23) combine to form a zygote (46)
Meiosis 1
-Interphase and prophase happen as normal.
-In metaphase 1 , Instead of lining up as a single file, they line up in homologous pairs
- Homologues pairs are then separated
-Two cells are then formed with 23 chromosomes each. (Haploid cells)
Meiosis 2
-Each of the 2 haploid cells from meiosis one go through division again.
- (Metaphase) They line up as a single file.
- (Anaphase) The sister chromatids then separate
- (Telophases) results in 4 daughter cells
Crossing over
-Happens in prophase 1
-Homologous chromosomes swap sections with each other resulting in recombinant chromosomes
-Increases genetic variation in the population (meaning you get some traits from your mother and some from your father)
