Meiosis Flashcards
What is asexual reproduction
produces 2 genetically identical offspring
only needs one parent
ex. bacteria
What is sexual production
involves 2 parents
leads to genetically distinct offspring
What is a diploid cell
somatic cell
has 2n (23 pairs of chromosomes)
skin, blood, gut, heart
What is a gamete
reproductive cell
haploid
n
has one copy of the chromosomes
which reproduction halves ploidy
meiosis
2n->n
makes 2 different daughter cells
What are the 3 main steps in meiosis and what happens
Interphase - DNA is replicated
Meiosis I Reduction - converts 1 diploid cell (2n) into 2 haploid cells (n)
Meiosis II Division - separates the contents of the 2 haploid cells into 4 haploid gametes
How many chromosomes after meiosis I it starts with 46
23 after meiosis I
If a cell has 6 chromosomes and 6 DNA molecules at the beginning of meiosis how many does it have at the end of replication (meiosis I)
It will have 6 chromosomes but 12 DNA molecules
What is crossing over when does it happen
only happens in prophase I
leads to non identical sister chromatids
When does DNA replicate and interphase happen in meiosis
only happens once in meiosis I in the beginning
What is the law of segregation
only one chromosome from each homologous pair will be found in each daughter cell
When do chromosomes form tetrads
prophase I of meiosis I
