meiosis Flashcards
what si sexual reproduction
involves production of gametes by meiosis
gametes fuse to form a zygote
zygote is unique
what are gametes
sex cells
haploid
what is meiosis
cell division in formation of gametes (non identical haploids)
what must occur prior meiosis
interpahse- copies pf genetic information are made
what happens during the first stage of meiosis
chromosomes pairs line up along the equator
chromosomes are separated and move to oppsoite poles of the cell (the side it pulled to is random= variation)
chromosome number is halved
what happens during the seconnd stage of meiosis
chromosomes line up along cell equator
seperated and move to opposite polls or cells
4 unique haploid gametes are produced
why is meiosis important for sexual reproduction
increases genetic variation
insures zygote is diploid
what is fertilisation
gametes nucleus fuse togther restoring the number of chromosomes
new cell divides by mitosis
what is a chromosome
a long coiled molecule of DNA that carries genetic information in the form of genes
define gene
a small section of DNA that codes for a sequence of amino acids to form a protein
