Meiosis Flashcards
1
Q
What is meiosis?
A
- the production of genetically different daughter haploid cells from a parent cell with reduction division
2
Q
How does meiosis cause genetic variation?
A
- crossing over (prophase1)
- independent assortment(metaphase1&11)
3
Q
Why is meiosis important?
A
- production of gametes for sexual reproduction
- gametes fuse with random fertilisation to produce a fertilised egg(zygote)
4
Q
What are homologous chromosomes?
A
- a pair of chromosomes, one from each parent with identical genes but different alleles at the same loci
- they are the same length and have centromeres at the same place
5
Q
What are alleles?
A
- different type of the same gene at the same loci on chromosome
