meds with chronic pain Flashcards
the experience of pain includes:
emotional response, learned experience, cultural factors, individual tolerance, Gate control theory, the placebo effect
opioid receptors are found in these 3 body parts
brain, spinal cord, GI tract
overexpression side effects of opioid analgesic
respiratory depression, sedation, constipation, nausea+ vomiting, urinary retention, hypotension
which medications should be prescribed in conjunction with opioids?
antiemetics and stool softeners
what could you teach your client that is taking an opioid regarding bowel hygiene?
increase fluid intake, increase fiber intake, ambulation
which type of morphine can not be crushed for administration
MS-Contin- extended release medications become immediate release when crushed.
this medication blocks the serotonin receptor selectively in the vagus nerve and CTZ
Ondansetron (antiemetic- serotonin antagonist)
what is ondansetron used for?
Antiemetic- used to treat nausea caused by opioids. Also used to treat post-surgery n+v, and n+v caused by chemo and radiation.
what are the side effects of Ondansetron (serotonin antagonist)
CNS side effects include dizziness, headache and fatigue
GI side effects include diarrhea, constipation, discomfort
attach to an opioid receptors to stimulate a response
opioid agonist- morphine
Produces analgesia, sedation, and a sense of well-being. Interferes with the processing of pain impulses. Alters our perception of pain and increases our pain tolerance.
opioid agonist- morphine
What is the difference between MS Contin and MSIR
MS Contin is extended release and MSIR is immediate release
How does docusate work
increases absorption of fat and water in the stools to make to stool softer and cause a bowel movement
How long does it take for docusate to produce a bowel movement
12-72 hours
overexpression side effect of docusate
