Meds: Actions and Indications Flashcards
Adenosine
Slows conduction through the AV node.
For Supraventricular tachycardia
Albuterol
Relaxes smooth muscle of bronchioles, inhibits histamine from mast cells.
For Bronchoconstriction and dyspnea.
Amiodarone
Blocks KCl -> prolonging action potential duration.
For VTach, VFib, Post resuscitation
ASA
Inhibits platelet aggregation in arteries.
For suspected ACS, Chest Pain, and CVA.
Atropine
For symptomatic bradycardia and organophosphate poisoning.
Calcium Chloride
For hypocalcemia and magnesium toxicity/overdose.
Replaces and maintains calcium.
Captopril
ACE Inhibitor - for CHF.
Dextrose
Hypoglycemia (hypotonic solution)
Benadryl (diphenhydramine)
For isolated/minimal allergic reaction.
Competes with histamine for H1-receptor sites and prevents (not reverses) histamine-mediated responses.
Enalaprilat
ACE inhibitor - for CHF
Epi
Stimulates alpha and beta-2 receptors in sympahetic sys thereby relaxing bronchial smooth muscle.
For cardiac arrest; anaphylaxis, bronchoconstriction.
Etomidate
(not used now) For sedation (NOT analgesic though)
Fentanyl
Opioid analgesic; inhibits ascending CNS pain pathways and inhibits pain threshold and perception by binding to opiate receptors.
For Pain or Sedation maintenance
Glucagon
Increases glucose level (glycogen to glucose in liver) and relaxes smooth muscle in digestive track.
For hypoglycemia and Beta-blocker overdose/reversal.
Haloperidol
Antipsychotic - blocks postsynaptic dopamine receptors in brain.
For behavioral emergencies.
