Midazolam
Quick onset
Conscious sedation with opioids (morphine/fentanyl)
IV push (wait 1-2 mins before pushing more)
Respiratory depression —> monitor VS constantly
Propofol
Quick on, quick off
Unconsciousness less than 60 sec after injection, lasts 3-5 mins
Rn cannot push
Profound respiratory depression
Must monitor VS and have resuscitation equipment
High risk for infection, formulated in lipid base medium
Open vials discarded within 6 hours
Lidocaine
Med will be injected into immediate area of surgery
Lidocaine with epinephrine
Epi decreases blood flow and delays absorption
Will be obvious warning that epi is in vial
Epi is contraindicated for fingers/nose/other body parts with end arteries
Malignant hyperthermia
Drug of choice is dantrolene
Spinal epidural/nerve block
Priority assessment is respiratory
Block in back—> legs and feet numb
Assess numbed parts after about 12 hours

Gases / inhalants
Fentanyl is measured in
Mcg
Opioids
Respiratory depression
Constipation
Sedation
Confused
Nausea
Check for what with opioids
BM especially in elderly
NSAIDS
contraindicated with peptic ulcer/bleeding disorders
Renal impairment
Give with food
NSAID + GI issues =
Bleed
Motrin causes
Gastric issues
