A

On the high street. They had three stores each with each stores leaning out over the one below. Some streets were so narrow that two people could shake hands with each other out the window of the third storey.

A

The church bells rang out at sunset signaling the curfew. This meant all fires in the town had to be put out.

A

A

A

Fairs. Pay taxes to the king or local lord.

A

The members of the guilds. They were the citizens who could vote for the corporation.

What were most townspeople?

A

Most townspeople were not citizens. They were unfree. Up to AD 1000 it was still common for people to be sold as slaves.

What is a guild?

A

An organisation in each town that every craftsperson had to belong to in order to sell their goods. Each guild controlled its own craft.

What did the craftspeople make? How many different craftspeople would a town have?

A

Stuff people needed. Over 30 in even the smallest town.

What did each guild do?

A

Regulate its trade. Set examinations to test if a craftsperson was good enough to join the guild. It set standards of work and decent wages. It looked after old or sick members and paid for their funerals.

How could a women join a guild?

A

If their husband died and they wanted to carry on his trade.

What were the three stages for a boy to become a master craftsman?

A

Apprentice, journeyman, master craftsman.

Who was the apprentice?

A

At twelve a boy could become an apprentice. For seven years he lived in the house of a master craftsman and learnt the trade. While there he worked without pay.

Who was the journeyman?

A

After seven years the apprentice became a journeyman. Now he was paid for his work. He could leave his old master and look for better wages.

How did a journeyman become a master craftsman?

A

The journeyman had to join a guild so he could become a master craftsman and sell his goods in the town. To join a guild he had to pay a large fee and produce a masterpiece in his trade to prove himself.
