Hrosvitha
A 10th century Catholic nun of Gandersheim Abby who wrote plotted scripts of historical moments (specifically the transformation of Europe from Pagan to Christian) rather than taking from religious text. Highly influenced by Publius Terrence.
Dulcitus
overly comedic play (written around 935-975 CE) by Hrosvitha that told about three christian women who were willing to sacrifice their life to remain servants of God and stay virgins.
Liturgical Drama
form of worship involving chanted dialogue of the celebrants and congregation during Mass. Also described as short “playlets” that drew stories directly from the bible. performed only on Holy Days.
Quem Quaertis
Earliest example of liturgical drama. focused on the discovery of Jesus at the tomb by the three Marys. 1st performed at Easter Mass in 925 CE in Winchester
Miracle Play
Originally written by the priest and performed by the Clergy. Based on lives of the saints. Popular during 10th-15th century) Eventually they were modernized and performed outdoors. Involved a Deus ex Machina ending.
