Medicines Design - Blag Flashcards
What is Exenatide?
A GLP-1 agonist
Injected SC
Side effects are of benefit to the patient!!
- Blocks pancereatic B cell apoptosis, and stimulates synthesis
- Promtotes satiety –> So can help people lose weight
What is the difference between a ‘Clean Drug’ and a ‘Dirty Drug’?
Clean –> Binds to one target site
Dirty –> Binds to several sites
So has many side effects…..which can be useful occasionally!!
Who shouldn’t take Aspirin?
Those who are prone to stomach ulcers
Those on other NSAIDs (as promotes the above)
How did is Vitamin D formed?
Cholesterol is dehydrogeneated (oxidised) with skin P450s –> adding a double bond between carbons 7 and 8
What is Vitamin D used for?
Osteoporosis –> Mainly in post-menopausal women
What is an example of a 19-no-steroid?
Estradiol
There has been a loss of a methyl at carbon 19, allowing the A ring to be aromatic (planar)
What do the dash and wedge represent? In terms of the face of the molecule
Wedge = Top phase (B)
Dash = Bottom phase (a)
How do we know if steroids are AB/CD Cis/Trans?
Cis –> If the molecules at 5 and 10 (or 13 and 14) are on the same face (eg, B)
Trans –> If the molecules are on opposite sides (one A one B)
