Medicine for TBL Flashcards
Delayed release
Drug released at a later time (ec)
Repeat action
Individual dose soon after admin the repeats later on (tab inside tab)
Prolonged release
Absorbed over longer period but onset delayed as slower release rate from dosage form
Sustained release
Initial release for therapeutic dose then gradual release over extended period
Extended release
Release drug slowly- plasma conc maintained for prolonged time
Controlled Release
Release drug at constant rate and provide plama concs that remain invarient with time
Which formulations leave stomach rapidly?
Solution and pellets <2mm
Which formulations can stay in the stomach for up to 10 hours if taken with a heavy meal?
single dose units >7mm
How long is the transit time through the small intestine?
3 hours
How do wax matrix systems work?
Drug in a hydrophobic matrix - remain intact during drug release
Contact with aq media, channeling agent dissolves and leaches out leaving porous matrix of tortuous capillaries
Drug dissolves and diffuses out of the system via capillaries
Rate of release governed by diss and diff of CA and drug
How do hydrophilic matrix systems function?
Colloids swell in contact with water = hydrated matrix layer which controls further diffusion into the matrix and the diffusion through the hydrated matrix layer controls the rate of release of the drug
Outer hydrated matrix layer erodes as it becomes more diluted - rate of erosion depends on nature of the colloid
Osmotic pump delivery
Drug in tablet core which is soluble and solubilizes drug in presence of water
core coated with a semi perm membrane which allows water topass into core
Core dissolves - hydrostatic pressure builds up which forces drug solution through hole in coating
MST Continus tablets
API in hydrated hydroxyalkyl cellulose and a higher aliphatic alcohol
MST Continus suspension granules
CATIONIC exchange resin (drug positive)
Morphone displaced by potassium and sodium ions
Zomorph
Pellets in capsule shell
Ethyl cellulose coating - diffuse throyugh this
