Define an unlicensed medication?
Medications that are LICENSED but for another condition.
Patient must be informed that medication is off-license
What is aciclovir and what does it treat?
An anti-viral medication
Used to treat:
Primary herpetic gingivostomatitis, recurrent herpetic lesions, shingles (recurrent herpes zoster)
What are the most common anti-fungals used in oral medicine and what are they used to treat?
Miconazole, fluconazole, nystatin
Acute pseudomembranous candidiasis
Acute erythematous candidiasis
What is beclomethasone MDI used for - licensed and unlicensed?
Licensed - asthma
Un-licensed - treating aphthous ulcers and lichen planus.
Can apply powder directly to small area.
Why are saliva replacements medical devices and not medicines?
They do not achieve their primary function by immunological, pharmacological or metabolic means.
What is the dosage of aciclovir that would be used to treat a viral infectionin adults?
200mg tablets
1 tablet 5x daily for 5 days
What is the first-line anti-fungal that would be used to treat oral candidiasis?
Miconazole - also has anti-bacterial effect
What is the second-line treatment that would be used to treat candidiasis that in unresponsive to AZOLE medication?
Nystatin
What type of candida is unresponsive to AZOLE medication?
Candida glabrata
What is prescription of miconazole for oral candidiasis?
80g tube
Pea-size amount after food 4x per day
Continue for 7 days after lesions heal
What is prescription of fluconazole for oral candidiasis?
7 capsules - 1 per day for a week
What medications can you not prescribe azole anti-fungals?
if patient is on warfarin or statins
What are common topical steroids used in OM and what are they used for?
Betamethasone mouthwash and MDI
Used for:
Aphthous ulcers
Lichen planus
