Opioids
Used for mild to severe pain -
bind to and activate certain receptors in the body (Brain, brain stem and spinal cord)
Monitoring: RR BP O2 LoC Pain level, BGL
Side effects: nausea, vomiting, dizziness, drousey, RR depression.
Antibiotics
Used infection
Side effects: nausea vomitting diarrhea, bloating, stomach cramping.
slows the growth of bacteria or kills bacteria
Non-opioids
used for mild to moderate pain
NSAIDS- Paracetamol - metabolised by the liver
Aspirin - side effects trigger asthma, Gastric ulcers, bleeding
Proton-pump inhibitors
used for prevention and protection stomach conditions - peptic ulcers GORD
-omperazole,
side effects- headache, diarrhea, constipation
Corticosteriods
Lowers inflammation in the body, allergic reactions, ease swelling
used in: IBD asthma colitis and bronchitis
side effects: osteoporosis, hypertension, diabetes, thinning skin
Diuretics
Helps the body get rid of sodium, increasing urine output. Reduces strain on heart and blood vessels therefore reducing blood pressure.
Daily weight, regular urine, blood tests for potassium BGL
used for Heart failure, kidney failure, liver disease, oedema
Examples - frusemide, bumetanide,amoiloride
ACE inhibitors
lowers blood pressure - used for hypertension
examples - lisinopril, quinapril, captopril
side effects - dry cough, nausea, rash and headache
monitor - potassium levels and renal function angioedema
Digoxin
heart to beat stronger and slower
Heart failure
side effects - changes in mood/metnal alertness anxiety
Beta blockers - lol
Decreases heart rate and decreases blood pressure
Do not use in patients with Lung conditions
used for angina, hypertension, cardiac dysrthmias
side effects - hypoglycaemia, bradycardia, hypotension, bronchoconstriction
