Medication Administration Flashcards
Medication interaction
When a medication us given with another medication and alters the effect or either or both medications
Pharmacokinetics
Absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion of a medication. (Describes onset of action, peak, duration, a d bioavailability
Adverse reactions
Negative effects experienced by a client as the result of a specific med,,,, may be hazardous, tolerated, or subside with continued use
Medications and children
Pharmacokinetics affected by age, size, and maturity of target organ.
Use metered space device for inhalants
IM injections in children
Lidocaine and prilocaine or liposomal lidocaine cream can be applied first.
Under 2 yrs, do vastus lateralis
For small infants, max dose cannot exceed 0.5 mL. (((1 mL for small children)))
Peak level
Highest concentration,, 1 hr after oral and IM injections, 30 min after iv
Trough level
Lowest level,, obtained 15 min before next scheduled dose
Infiltration
Administration of a nonvesicant fluid in the extravascular space often from Dislodging of an iv cannula
Treatment of infiltration
STOP INFUSION,,,, remove iv line, cold compresses, elevate extremity, insert new iv in other extremity
Extravasation
Inadvertent administration of irritating/vesicant medications into the surrounding tissues of a vein
Treatment of extravasation
STOP INFUSION,, aspirate if possible, cold compress, document, photograph
Phlebitis treatment
STOP INFUSION,,, remove peripheral iv catheters, heat, new iv in other extremity
Venous spasm treatment
Temporarily slow infusion, appt warm compress
TPN
Administer via pump, serum glucose q6h, change dressing q48-72 hour,,, change tubing q24h
IF NO TPN SOLUTION–> dextrose 10% in water to prevent hypoglycemia
