Medication Flashcards
How do antipsychotics work?
dopamine receptor antagonist
What are the two classes of antipsychotic?
first and second generation
How do first generation antipsychotics work?
D2 receptor antagonists primarily
What are the side-effects of first generation antipsychotics ?
extra-pyramidal se
elevated prolactin
What are extra-pyramidal side effects?
dystonia
parkinsonism
akathisia
tardive dyskinesia
What is dystonia?
involuntary muscle contraction
What is akathisia?
inner restlessness
What is tardive dyskinesia?
stiff jerky movements of the face eg blinking, sticking out tongue
Are first or second generation antipsychotics better for negative symptoms?
second
How do second generation anti-psychotics work?
Lower D2 receptor affinity.
High serotonin/dopamine binding ratio.
What side-effects do second generation antipsychotics have?
inc risk of metabolic abnormality eg. obesity, inc cholesterol, inc bp, diabetes
SE os antipsychotics
extrapyramidal neurleptic malignant syndrome prolonged QT hyperprolactin metabolic syndrome anticholinergic hyponatraemia
What risk does clozapine have?
agranulocytosis
Which types of drugs diffuse effectively over the blood brain barrier?
lipophilic
What is a monoamine?
neurotransmitter inc dopamine, serotonin and noradrenaline
