a medication or other agent that causes a reduction of the water present in the body; most commonly a medication such as Lasix that causes frequent urination to expel extra fluid in patients with congestive heart failure
diuretic
a class of analgesic medications used to treat severe pain by blunting the senses (examples include Morphine, Hydrocodone, and Dilaudid)
narcotic
antiarrhythmic commonly used in the chemical cardioversion of supraventricular tachycardia
Adenosine
commonly used to treat more life-threatening, acute arrhythmias
Amiodarone
typically an IV antibiotic given to patients being admitted for a bacterial infection
Ancef
typically used for anxiety and/or agitation; also used to stop an active epileptic seizure (not preventative)
Ativan/Lorazepam
most commonly used during cardiac arrest to speed up heart rate
Atropine
common antibiotic for less serious bacterial infections
Azithromycin/Zithromax
a common antibiotic ointment used when dressing wounds in the ED
Bacitracin
a common oral antibiotic used to treat less serious bacterial infections
Bactrim
used to treat arrhythmias, especially atrial fibrillation
Cardizem/Diltiazem
typically used to treat acutely high blood pressure in the ED
Catapres/Clonidine
a cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat some more life threatening infections
Cefepime
a very common oral antibiotic used to treat a variety of infections; commonly “cipro”
Ciprofloxacin
most common blood thinner used to treat and prevent clots; requires routine INR checks
Coumadin/Warfarin
a common oral steroid used to help treat inflammation
Decadron
a common treatment for atrial fibrillation, commonly called “Dig” (pronounced didge)
Digoxin
America’s most requested IV pain medication; a narcotic 7-8 times stronger than Morphine
Dilaudid
a two-medication breathing treatment to help open the airway
“Duoneb” (Albuterol + Atrovent)
IV medication that helps improve blood flow, typically in cardiac arrest scenarios
Dopamine
commonly used to treat sever allergic reactions; also used to help jump start the hart in cardiac arrest scenarios
Epinephrine
a common, rapid-onset sedative used in many ED procedures including endotracheal intubation
