ensures all Australian’s have access to free or low cost medical, optometrical and hospital care whilst being free to choose private health services
Medicare provides access to

Medicare levy
1.5 % of taxable income
Private health insurance rebate
a percentage of the premium paid to a registered health fund for appropriate private health insurance cover
rebate is not affected by level of income
Medicare levy surcharge
individuals and families on incomes above the medicare levy surcharge thresholds, who do not have private health insurance, may have to may a surcharge 1%
