Not fully alert; drifts off to sleep when not stimulated. Can be aroused but thinking seems slow. Loses train of thought.

Difficult to arouse. Confused when aroused. Speech may be mumbled or incoherent. Requires constant stimulation for cooperation.

Stupor
Unconscious with some response to pain or vigorous shaking. Groans and mumbles. Reflex activity maintained.

Comatose
Completely unconscious. Does not respond to pain or any stimulation. Deep coma has no reflex response; light coma has maintained some reflex response

Delirium
A state of dulled cognition, impaired alertness. Inattentive. Unable to have coherent conversation. Impaired memory. May be easily agitated.
