Apnea
temporary cessation of breathing, and therefore, of the body’s intake of oxygen and release of carbon dioxide
Bradypnea
abnormally slow breathing
Dyspnea
shortage of air resulting in labored or difficult breathing, sometimes accompanied by pain
Eupnea
normal, unimpaired respiration
Hyperpnea
an increased respiratory rate, or breathing that is deeper than that usually experienced during normal activity
Oligopnea
infrequent or shallow respirations, usually less than 10 breaths per minute
Orthopnea
labored breathing that occurs when lying flat and improves when standing or sitting up
Tachypnea
abnormally rapid respiration; a respiratory rate greater than normal for that age
Hemoptysis
the expectoration of blood that arises from the larynx, trachea, bronchi, or lung
Hemothorax
blood or bloody fluid in the pleural cavity caused by rupture of blood vessels resulting from inflammation of the lungs in pneumonia or pulmonary tuberculosis, lung cancer or trauma
Hydrothorax
edema marked by excess serous fluid in the pleural cavities
Pneumothorax
a collection of air or gas in the pleural cavity
Pyothorax
empyema
Asphyxia
an insufficient intake of oxygen
Angiography
a description of blood vessels and lymphatics; diagnostic or therapeutic radiography of the heart and blood vessels with a radiopaque contrast medium
