Babinski sign/reflex
Dorsiflexion of big toe when bottom of foot is stroked. Normal in infants; sign of disease in adults.
Battle’s sign
Ecchymosis over the mastoid process
Chvostek’s sign
Twitching of facial muscles caused by tapping the facial nerve (CN VII) near the tragus
Cullen’s sign
A bluish discoloration to the umbilical area
Grey Turner’s sign
Ecchymosis in the flank area
Homan’s sign
Discomfort behind the knee or increased resistance in response to dorsiflexion of the foot
Kehr’s sign
Pain in the tip of the shoulder caused by blood in the peritoneal cavity
Kussmaul’s sign
Rise in jugular venous pressure (JVP) during inspiration
Levine’s sign
A clenched fist held over the chest in response to ischemic chest pain
Markle test (heel drop)
Pain caused when patient stands on tiptoes and drops heels down quickly or when patient hops on one leg
McBurney’s point
RLQ pain at halfway point between umbilicus and iliac spine
Murphy’s sign
Cessation of inspiration when RUQ is palpated
Prehn’s sign
Lack of pain relief after scrotal elevation
Psoas sign
Abdominal pain when right hip is hyperextended
Rovsing’s sign
Pain in the RLQ with palpation of LLQ
