Median Flashcards
What is Median?
Median is the middle value of a set of data
What must first be done before we can determine the median?
The data must be arranged in ascending order
What is ascending order?
Values are arranged from smallest to largest
If there is an odd number of values, how do you determine position of the middle value?
Add 1 to the number of values and then divide this value by 2, and this is the middle position
The median is the value at the middle position
If there is an even number of values, how do you determine position of the middle value?
Divide the number of values by 2. This number and the number after it are the middle two values.
The median is the mean of the two middle values
Arranging the following numbers in ascending order
7, 4, 8, 3, 5
3, 4, 5, 7, 8
Arranging the following numbers in ascending order
7, 4, 8, 3, 5, 4
3, 4, 4, 5, 7, 8
Find the median
16
Find the median
18
Find the median
Since there are 2 middle numbers, we add the 2 numbers and divide this value by 2
8 + 9 = 17
17/2 = 8.5
Find the median
Since there are 2 middle numbers, we add the 2 numbers and divide this value by 2
22 + 22= 44
44/2 = 22
How many students are there
2 + 3 + 1 + 3 + 2 + 2 = 13
What is the middle position
13 + 1 = 14
14/2 = 7
The median is at the 7th position
Find the median by arranging all the numbers
The median is 8
Find the median without arranging all the numbers
The median is 8
