Dot Diagram Flashcards
What is a dot diagram?
It is made up of a horizontal line and dots that are placed above the line. The dots represent the values in the data.
What is the first step to create a dot diagram based on the data provided
First draw a horizontal line and label the values.
As the smallest hours spent is 0 and highest is 7, label from 0 to 7.
What is the second step to create a dot diagram based on the data provided
Add the dots for each time a value appears.
How many students are involved in the survey?
16
you can either count the number of dots or
you can add the frequency
How do we identify the most frequent data?
We look at the value that has the most dots
In this case, 2 hours is the value
How do we calculate the total number of hours all the students spent?
we have 2 students who spent 0 hours, 2 * 0 = 0
we have 2 students who spent 1 hours, 2 * 1 = 2
we have 6 students who spent 2 hours, 6 * 2 = 12
we have 3 students who spent 3 hours, 3 * 3 = 9
we have 2 students who spent 4 hours, 2 * 4 = 8
we have 1 student who spent 7 hours, 1 * 7 = 7
So we add all, 0 + 2 + 12 + 9 + 8 + 7 = 38 hrs
How many people were involved in the survey?
24
How many students bought 4 books?
3
What is the most common number of books bought?
5 and 7
both have 5 persons
What is the most number of books bought?
9
1 person bought 9 books
What is the total number of books bought?
3 * 0 + 1 * 2 + 2 * 2 + 3 * 4 +
5 * 5 + 2 * 6 + 5 * 7 + 1 * 8 + 1 * 9
= 0 + 2 + 4 + 12 + 25 + 12 + 35 + 8 + 9
= 107
