Status Quo Bias
Status quo bias is an emotional bias; a preference for the current state of affairs. The current baseline (or status quo) is taken as a reference point, and any change from that baseline is perceived as a loss.
Ascribed Status
Is a position that is neither earned nor chosen but assigned. e.g age, race/ethnicity, gender, social class
Achieved Status
A position that is earned or chosen e.g student, worker, team member
Hegemony
Cultural hegemony refers to domination or rule maintained through ideological or cultural means. It is usually achieved through social institutions, which allow those in power to strongly influence the values, norms, ideas, expectations, worldview, and behavior of the rest of society.
Institutional racism
institutional racism is a form of racism expressed in the practice of social and political institutions. It is reflected in disparities regarding wealth, income, criminal justice, employment, housing, health care, political power and education, among other factors.
Gender
The social behaviours and characteristics associated with biological sex
Sex
The biological characteristics that distinguish males and females, such as reproductive organs or chromosomes.
Hegemonic masculinity
hegemonic refers to the concept of hegemony - the social dominance of certain group, exercised not through brute force but through a cultural dynamic which extends into private life and social realms.
Heterosexism
Refers to the anti homosexual beliefs and practices embedded in social institutions.
Hidden curriculum
Standards of behaviour that are deemed proper by society and are taught subtly in schools
Socialization
The lifelong process through which individuals learn the attitudes, values, and beliefs appropriate for members of a particular culture.
Social mobility
Social mobility is shifting from one social status to another, commonly to a status that is either higher or lower.
Nuclear family
a heterosexual couple and their dependent children, regarded as a basic social unit.
