Eugenics
The process of trying to improve the genetic quality of humanity through social engineering, using sterilisation, segregation, marriage certificates, immigration restrictions and the eugenics use of birth control.
Mental defectives act
The Mental Defectives Act 1911 allowed people to admit themselves to mental hospitals voluntarily. This encouraged early treatment of some mental illnesses and helped reduce the stigma of committal (compulsory admission) and residence in a mental institution.
Culture
Everyday activities or habits that you do within a certain group of people. A toolkit that allows each of us to operate within the rules of our society.
Norms
Rules defining appropriate and inappropriate ways of behaving in a society.
Subcultures
Subsets of the dominant culture that have distinct values, beliefs, norms, symbols etc.
Bloke culture
Subculture strongly present in NZ. What it means to be a man, some elements can be embodied with hegemonic masculinity.
Ethnocentrism
Occurs when a person uses their own culture to judge another culture.
Cultural Relativism
is the practice of assessing a culture by its own standards rather than viewing it through the lens of ones own culture
Commodification
commodification is to make something into an object for commercial use. In terms of tourism, commodification refers to using a place’s culture and the cultural artifacts to make a large enough profit to support part of the area’s economy
Colonialism
the policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically.
Built-in obsolescence
Social implications. Deliberate ways to limit technological life span, either through functionality or appeals to fashion. eg. advertising, pressure to upgrade.
Eurocentrism
Is the tendency to see every thing from the perspective of European values, beliefs, and to judge things accordingly.
Post-coloniality
Describes an analytical approach and political position that is critical of the processes and impact of colonialism (includes the attempt to establish new, non or anti-colonial institutions and identities.
