Libertarian Philosophy
concerns with the rights of the individual to be autonomous without interference from the state
every individual has the right to access anything they want
Libertarian Media
mostly privately owned and operated; fair competition in most cases self-regulation but reward and punishment system
e.g. USA because it is different from the Canadian model - US is taking over
free flow of information - anyone who wants it can get it
Libertarian Goal
financial gain; entertainment; dominant public taste
increasing profit is the goal - they compete (sometimes they buy out the competition or self regulate)
Authoritarian Philosophy
ruler deserves total obedience (total immunity of those in power)
Authoritarian Media
state control over the media; privately or publically owned; state censorship
Authoritarian Goal
propagandistic role of media; punishment if against state principles
e.g. dictatorship
Totalitarian Philosophy
Centralized government as caretaker of society, paternalistic role
Totalitarian Media
state ownership
Totalitarian Goal
educate the population content censored by the state/punishment
e.g. communist countries
Social responsibility Philosophy
The balance between freedom of expression, individual freedoms, media freedom, and societal values
Freedom of expression is different in Canada (within the limits of the law & social responsibility) than in the US (they say whatever they want)
Social Responsibility Media
The indirect influence of the government; self-regulation
Social Responsibility Goal
Fairness; factual coverage, education and integration, non-censorship
e.g. Canada
Development Philosophy
The autonomy of transitional countries and developing countries the right to self-express as cultures and independent nations
Development Media
improvement of social conditions and stimulation towards social change/usually government-owned and therefore some degree of censorship
