media ecology refers to the complex environments within media texts, producers, distributors, technologies and audiences exist

more information, high resolution, participants are being given the full picture, theres little uncertainty to resolve about what is being communicated

how media spreads to, becomes intertwined with and influences other fields or social institutions such as politics, war and religion

old media used to be top down but as it has evolved it has become more distributed mediation
what is technological determinism?
a theory that suggests technology drives and shapes societal development, behaviours, and cultural changes. it argues that technological advancements influence social structures, values and even human cognition, often in ways that are beyond human control. according to this view, society adapts to the conditions set by new technologies, rather than individuals or cultures actively shaping technology

the way we are perceived by others or the way we present ourselves to others (plural personae)
what is a public persona?
seen in the media are often very artificial e.g. Makeup, scripting, selection of photos, filters, airbrush.
- Seen on Instagram where you can edit
- Often lacking in reality
- People want their public personas to be as pleasing as possible
- Not always intentional
- We often create these personas due to social pressure to fit in and be popular
