What is the media?
The word media refers to any type of mass communication.
What is censorship?
Restrictions on things people are allowed to publish.
What is evangelism?
Sharing beliefs and trying to persuade others to follow them.
Why might a Christian think that the media is a good thing?
They may say that the media can be used for evangelism and by doing this, they are fulfilling God’s wishes because Jesus said “make disciples of every nation.”
What are some types of media?
- Television and Radio
- Videos/DVDs
- CDs and MP3s
- Newspapers and Magazines
- Books
- Posters and Advertisements
- Internet and Social Networking
Why are Christians against portraying religious figures in the media?
Creating false idols, against Bible, Ten Commandments
Name two ways Christians use the media
- To evangelise-spread the message of their religion
* To teach-to tell people the truth as they believe their religion is often misrepresented.
What was it called when Jesus asked his disciples to ‘make disciples of every nation’?
The Great Commission, mentioned in Matthew 28:16-20.
Give an example of censorship in the media.
When people can’t swear on TV before 9pm.
Withholding or destroying information people don’t want the public to see.
Why should religious figures be portrayed in the media?
Freedom of speech.
For evangelism.
Why shouldn’t religious figures be portrayed in the media?
It can mock the religion or be offensive.
Why might Christians disapprove of violence in the media
The Bible teaches that violence is wrong so showing it in the media must therefore be wrong and promote violence.
Leviticus 26:6: “And I shall place peace upon the land”
What are some Christian issues with pornography?
It can be addictive, promotes sexual promiscuity and can be disrespectful to women.
“Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.” -1 Corinthians 6:18
What are some religious reasons for censorship?
Some reasons for religious censorship are the fact that it can undermine there beliefs and makes a joke out of the religion. Also, the censorship protects vulnerable people from sex, violence and pornography.
What is meant by “freedom of speech”?
Freedom of speech is the belief that people have the right to voice opinions freely and without restrictions.
