what are 3 ways media of crime is distorted?

what does distorted media show?

A
  1. media overplays extraordinary crimes and underplays ordinary crimes. Felson refers to this as dramatic fallacy
  2. overrepresent violent and sexual crimes. soothill and wallaby found that newspapers reporting rape cases greatly increased from 1950s and 1980s. over presents crime and 60% of space allocated to crime
  3. media portrays criminals and victims are older and middle class Felson refers this to age fallacy

disorted media is social construct and s.cohen and young argue it is manufactured by journalist, editors and directors

Q

how can media cause crime (3)

why do left realist argue media is caused by relative deprivation + criticism

A
  1. imitation = by providing deviant role model resulting in copy cat behaviour e.g bandura research
  2. desensitisation = though repeated view of violence so it starts to become normal
  3. glamorising offenders.

left realist argue
- media create a sense of relative deprivation - a sense of lacking what other people seem to have among poor and marginalised

  • today everyone has access to media and media represents everyone with materialistic goods and this creates relative deprivation amongst people who can not afford this
  • this can lead to crime as people cant obtain these goods so they turn to crime.

evaluation: they trust the ocs which show that w.c are criminals and therefore white collar crimes do not appear in ocs because law is selectively reinforced.
