Med chem - Metro, nitro, oxazolidineones, glycopeptides Flashcards
4 nitroimidazoles and what are they used for
metronidazole
tinidazole
secnidazole
benznidazole
originally, used for vaginal infections (caused by trichomonas vaginalis) BUT shown to be effective for amebiasis, giardiasis, and ANAEROBIC BACTERIAL INFECTIONS (including c diff!!!)
c diff is aerobic or anaeorbic
OBLIGATE anaerobe
MOA nitrofurantoin
taken intracellularly by bacterial flavoproteins. reduces nitrofurantoin into reactive intermediates (including nitro radical!!)
these intermediates bind to bacterial ribosomes and inhibit bacterial enzymes that synthesize DNA, RNA, and cell wall proteins and other metabolic enzymes
nitrofurantoin is ____ administered
orally
what bacteria is nitrofurantoin effective against
most gram (+) and gran (-)
is nitrifurantoin resistance common? why or why not?
RARE
because radicals are formed through bacterial bioreduction. bacteria can’t really stop this because they need reduction to survive
name 6 oxazolidineones
linezolid
torezolid
tedizolid
radezolid
posizolid
eperezolid
MOA oxazolidineones
bacteriostatic protein synthesis inhibitors by binding 30s, 50s, subunit
uses of linezolid
nosocomial infections caused by MRSA and VRE
