Mechanisms of Passive Transport. Exam1 Flashcards
what are water insoluble molecules considered?
lipophilic, hydrophobic, or non-polar
what are water soluble molecules considered?
hydrophilic or polar
What is passive transport?
Molecules moving through the membrane with no added energy.
What is the first way passive transport can occur and give an example?
Substances moves by lipid solubility through the phospholipid bilayer
Ex: gases CO2, O2 fat-soluble vitamins A,D,E,K steroid hormones estrogen, testosterone, cortisol
What is the second way passive transport can occur and give an example?
Substances move through water-filled pores
Ex: H+ion, K+ion, Cl-ion, urea, water
what is the third way passive transport can occur and give an example?
Substances move by carrier proteins in membrane. Need to have lipophilic exterior and hydrophilic core with one or more pockets.
Ex: glucose, other simple sugars, amino acids, and nucleic acids
