Mechanisms Of Disease During Embryogenesis Flashcards
What are the 2 main periods of human development? - what happens in each
Embryonic period and fetal period
Embryonic - most organogenesis occurs
Fetal period - growth and modelling
What leads to congenital malformations?
Defects during embyrogenesis - when organogenesis takes place
What is the structure of a fertilised zygote?
Pronuclei (haploid, each from each parent)
Perivitelline space (space between zygote and zona pellucida)
Polar bodies (from meiotic divisions)
Zygote
What is the cleavage stage?
Splitting/division of the zygote without growth, so cells compact
What happens in compaction?
The morula is undergoes compaction to form the blastocyst. Cells sort into a structure of 2 layers.
It also becomes polar as the fluid filled cavity pushes inner cell mass + becomes non-symmetric.
After compaction, how does the blastocyst form?
What is meant by the blastocyst being polar?
What is the strucure of the blastocyst once fully impanted?
What is gastrulation?
What are the steps in gastrulation?
What steps must the blastocyst undergo after becoming fully impanted?
Gastrulation, neurulation and embryonic folding.
What are the steps in neurulation?
What are somites?
