Lab Investigation Of Full Blood Count And White Cell Disorders Flashcards
Where are blood cell produced?
Bone marrow of long bones
Where are blood cells found?
mature in bone marrow and mature blood cells found in peripheral blood
What is in red blood count within full blood count?
Hb - haemoglobin conc Hct - percentage of red blood cells in blood volume MCV - mean cell volume (size) MCH - mean cell haemoglobin RDW - range of deviation around rbc size Reticulocyte count Blood film
What is else is in full blood count apart from red blood cell results?
Total WBC and each type
Neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, basophils and eosinophils
Platelet count and size
Cells that shouldn’t be present
What 2 things does a blood film show?
Numbers - low or high
Morphology if normal + cells that shouldn’t be present
What can be seen in morphology of red blood cellss
Size, colour for Hb content, shape, polychromasia (blue colour) and other bodies
What can be seen in morphology of white blood cells?
Numbers Normal morphology - features Immature cells (precursors) Abnormal cells e.g. blasts other bodies
What are the advantages of automated haematology analyser?
efficient and cost effective
accurate an dprecise in quantitative blood test
can perform multiple tests
reduce labour
What are the disadvantages of automated haematology analyser?
Flagging lab results in labour intensive
CANT SEE RED BLOOD CELL MORPHOLOGY ONLY WHITE BLOOD CELLS morphology
Platelet clumps are counted as single and say low count
Expensive with high running cost
What is anisocytosis?
unequal red blood cell cycle - size of RBC morphology
What are examples of abnormal shape morphology of rbc?
ellipotocytes, poikilocytes
Why does polychromasia happen?
baby rbs have residual rna so they pick p stain differently appearing more blue/purple
What is on a blood film showing iron deficiency anaemia?
Ovalocytes/elliptocytes
Pale cells - hypochromic
Scrappy cells
What is on a blood film showing macrocytic megaoblastic anaemia?
Big cells
- gasterectomy so not intrinsic factor made in parietal cells in stomach. patient needs to take b12 supplements
hat is on a blood film showing acquired haemolytic anaemia?
Spherocytes - round with no pale middle
Polychromasia - lots of reticulotytes (trying to recompensate so no problem in bone marrow) e.g jaundice so cells die quickly
